FAQ

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
BJJ stands for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It was developed in the early 20th century from traditional Japanese jiu-jitsu and judo, and was adapted and popularized by the Gracie family in Brazil.

Will Jiu Jitsu help me in self-defence?
Yes, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) can be very effective for self-defense, especially in one-on-one situations where a fight goes to the ground. It teaches you how to control, escape from, and subdue opponents using leverage, joint locks, and chokeholds—even against larger attackers. BJJ also trains you to stay calm under pressure and defend yourself without relying on strength or striking. However, it’s less effective against multiple attackers or weapons, so it’s most useful when combined with awareness, striking skills, and situational judgment.

How Often Should I Train?
How often you should train BJJ depends on your goals and experience level. For beginners, 1-3 times per week is ideal to build a solid foundation without overwhelming your body. As you progress, training 3-5 times a week helps refine techniques and improve conditioning. Advanced practitioners or those aiming to compete often train 5+ times a week, focusing on specific skills and sparring. Regardless of your level, it’s crucial to balance training with rest and recovery to avoid injury and burnout.

Is it a good idea to enrol my children in these classes?
Yes, enrolling your children in BJJ classes can be a great idea! BJJ teaches valuable life skills like discipline, respect, confidence, problem-solving, and perseverance, all while promoting physical fitness. It’s also an excellent way for kids to learn how to defend themselves in a safe and controlled environment. Since BJJ emphasizes technique over strength, children of all sizes can excel, and it can help them build resilience and manage challenges. Plus, it’s a fun and engaging way to develop coordination, balance, and social skills while making new friends.

I'm scared of getting injured. What should I expect?
It's completely normal to feel concerned about injury when starting BJJ, but it's important to know that injuries are relatively rare if you train safely and listen to your body. In BJJ, most of the focus is on technique and control rather than brute strength, and the community is generally very supportive and cautious, especially with beginners. You'll start with fundamental movements and gradually increase intensity as your skills and confidence grow. While some soreness is common (like any physical activity), serious injuries are rare, and many academies have clear rules about tapping out (signalling surrender) to avoid any harm during sparring. Proper warm-ups, cool-downs, and communication with your training partners will help minimize risks.
